DNK Presents Bikepacking Series
Mission: To provide a safety- in- numbers experience for men and women interested in bikes, camping, and ultimately bikepacking! By organizing a series of events with decreasing levels of support, we hope to break down barriers of cost, experience, community, and anything else that keeps you from trying something new!
The Plan: 3 events to foster growth into a rugged, experienced bike packer, ready to take on more mileage and less civilization. The terrain: off road, gravel to actual mountain bike trails. This is not a ‘touring’ trip.
Meet Your Guides:
Tiffany “Hutch” Hutchens:
Tiffany “Hutch” Hutchens is a level two IMBA certified mountain bike coach who fully embraces the entertainment facet of teaching. “If I can paint a picture in your head that makes you laugh, then you’re going to remember how to execute the skill.”
Kate Chernivsky “Comrad”
Growing up Kate’s adventurous spirit was cultivated in an incubator rich in road trips, bikes, camping, climbing in trees, and being in the woods.
In her adult like Kate’s love for bikes was solidified when she realized they were a threshold from the world of the ordinary into a world of mystery, excitement and remoteness from everyday life.
May 1-3, 2020 Hoosier National Forest (southern end) Tell City, IN minimal gear required on-bike. 2 nights, distance each day 20-30 miles, support vehicle with camp gear and meal at sleep spot. Make own handlebar bag campfire activity!
What to Expect: 5-7 hours of riding per day. Two pace groups will probably form but nobody will be left behind. This is not a race and we want to emphasize the joy of the journey- both through nature and community. Plan to bring minimal bike gear and minimal camping gear. Bring favorite bike food but dinner and breakfast will be provided (to cook). Expect to need 200 calories for every hour (7 hr/day) on the bike. Also need to be able to carry 3 liters of water (in mild temps). Plan to bring 1 warm weather outfit and 1 cold/wet weather outfit, head to toes.
Required Gear: You will need your own bike that you are familiar with riding, both for physical and mechanical preparation! A mountain bike will be best for this Bikepacking event. A road bike will NOT work, a gravel bike would possibly work, a full suspension or hard trail suspension mountain bike will be best for this event. A water bottle, electrolytes, snacks and the proper clothing, i.e. padded shorts, proper shoes clipless or flat soled shoes, technical material for clothing is recommended to stay comfortable while riding. Everything else can be rented or borrowed.
Anything from a short travel full suspension mountain bike or off-road gravel rigid frame will work for these trips. Keep in mind we will be on multi use rugged trail, gravel, and paved roads at times. You will definitely need knobby tires. Gear ratios for steep terrain and some suspension will be greatly appreciated by your body. These routes have been vetted on a fully rigid gravel bike, so pick your level of suffering.
