DNK Presents Increases Business Through the Indiana Conference for Women

My wife, Kate and I own outdoor adventure company, DNK Presents. Last summer I applied for a chance to pitch our business in the Dolphin Tank at the Indiana Conference for Women. Shock, amazed, scared, were the words I was thinking when I first received the email that DNK Presents was accepted into The Dolphin Tank. At the time, I did not know that my 5 minute pitch would connect us with several large organizations interested in our services, give me the tools I needed to successfully execute our business story, and a chance to connect with other impactful women and mentors as part of the process.

The months leading up to the conference were just as important as the day of. The Dolphin Tank finalists received three optional check-in Startup Study Hall sessions conducted by The Startup Ladies, an organization that connects, identifies, educates, and connects women entrepreneurs starting up and scaling up their businesses, to assist us in our pitch for the Dolphin Tank. These sessions were incredibly valuable in the successful delivery of my pitch during the Indiana Conference for Women.

We made several connections from this experience; one of the most significant was made with $6 billion dollar technology company, Salesforce. Two of their executive team members approached Kate and I after the pitch, we met later that year, and have since scheduled an adventure outing with their Women’s Inspiration Network (WIN) group. This connection and business growth would not have occurred without the prestigious Indiana Conference for Women, and by including Springboard Enterprise’s Dolphin Tank into the conference. We could not have asked for a better experience from receiving the initial, you were accepted email, to the end of the conference. We are forever grateful to the courageous women who initiated this conference, and the amazing efforts of others to bring in influential women and businesses to this conference.

Being accepted into the Dolphin Tank at the Indiana Conference for Women not only gave DNK Presents remarkable exposure, but also confidence, and tenacity convening our message and delivering our story to a room full of strangers. The feedback and energy from the entire day left us feeling recharged and excited for our business to accelerate to the next level. The Indiana Conference for Women is an outstanding day filled with inspiration, networking, and motivation for women entrepreneurs, and women in business. We look forward to the conference this year and to the many years ahead.

Making Adventure a Priority

Making Adventure a Priority

By: Indy Chamber

Charging up and down the hills on narrow single track on mountain bikes, encouraging one another through the last stretch of their trail run, dripping wet from the splashes during white water rafting, married duo Danielle and Kate Nolan are always looking for their next adventure. After sharing their experiences with family and friends, a spark of wanderlust grew among the group leading the two to form DNK Presents.

Rather than suggesting where to go and what to do, DNK Presents offers guided tours for people seeking an active lifestyle. Their mission is to provide opportunities for people to “re-charge” themselves in nature, getting away from their technology driven lives.

Both Kate and Danielle are inherently adventurous and regularly go backpacking, kayaking, or mountain biking, which inspired them to start DNK Presents. Outdoor adventures are physically, mentally, and spiritually healthy for you, and are very beneficial to job performance.

Studies have shown that when exposed to nature, people build stronger relationships, improve productivity, increase motivation, foster problem solving, encourage creativity, promote a healthy lifestyle, etc. Additionally, pushing your limits through an outdoor adventure builds confidence, specifically in women.

“We recently had a woman who was a life coach go with us on a caving adventure. She was claustrophobic and had to face her fears of one tight spot in the cave. She buckled down and had to practice what she preached to get through it. Afterwards, she was so pleased with herself for completing the adventure!” Kate recalled.

Caving

On an overnight backpacking trip composed of 17 women, Kate and Danielle simply asked, “What does adventure mean to you?” They compiled a video of the women’s answers, including a woman who just turned 50 and decided to do 50 new things.

“We want women to gain confidence. There needs to be more women leaders in executive positions in the workforce. Women should be empowered, step outside of their comfort zone, and take their confidence to the next level.” Kate says.

DNK Presents is holding a Women’s Adventure Contest giving people the opportunity to nominate a woman in their lives who needs adventure. The four women who win will spend four days exploring the backcountry, trails, and lakes in Indiana. “We want to give back to the community, and feel that this is the best way to do it,” Danielle says. Backpacking

If you are longing for adventure close to Indy on your own, Danielle and Kate recommend Eagle Creek Park, Fort Benjamin Harrison State Park, and Brown County State Park.

“We love being in Indy. We love the opportunities to be adventurous, like the bike paths and multi-use cultural trail. It is an inclusive, diverse, and welcoming city that allows you to be yourself,” Kate says.

DNK Presents recently signed on as a supporter of Indiana Competes, a business coalition united in the belief that Indiana is and should remain a welcoming place for all. “Indiana Competes has recently made headlines sending an inspiring and encouraging message, and we love being a part of that momentum,” Danielle explains.

Kate and Danielle took a chance, starting a business doing something they love, and that risk has proven to be worth the reward. So what advice do they have for future entrepreneurs?

“Start now, there is no reason to wait.,” Danielle says, a member of NAWBO and the Start-Up Ladies out of Launch Fishers.

The duo has also benefitted from free business coaching through the Indy Chamber’s Entrepreneurial Services division.

“The Indy Chamber has so many resources that we have taken advantage of, like business coaching, networking, and their willingness to help. It’s a great forward-thinking group to be a part of. We tell all of our friends that are starting a business to join!” the couple agrees.

Women Leaders Must Step Outside Their Comfort Zone

By: Danielle Wolter Nolan

22 out of the nations top Fortune 500 companies are female. That’s literally 22 women out of 500 CEOs.

Women make up only 19.2% of executive officers in those top 500 companies, yet research shows the when businesses have women as executives they see a 34% increase of return on equity, and their shareholders see a 35% increase. See more information at Catalyst, Women http://www.catalyst.org/knowledge/women-sp-500-companies

Why aren’t there more women leaders?

Females make up nearly half of today’s workforce, yet they are struggling to become leaders in business. Many of those reasons include, lack of confidence, don’t like taking risks, like to follow the rules, and “play it safe”. This all keeps women in their comfort zone.

Let’s just say it, it’s about time women start breaking the rules! Why let the men have all the fun? Be bold, be brave a go for it ladies.

As we’ve talking about the Women’s Adventure Contest, we have been getting some great feedback and lots of questions from women and men who are interested in nominating a woman in their life who needs adventure. We’ve even had some women confess they will try to find someone to nominate themself personally for the contest. Some responses we have received include, “Oh so they need to be really physically fit to do this, or what if they’ve never done those activities before.” The activity adventures they were referring to include, backpacking, paddle board yoga, meditation, mountain biking, and some other surprises that won’t be revealed until that weekend.

Below lists responses and feedback on the Women’s Adventure Contest questions:

“They need to be really physically fit to do this.”

First, everyone’s fitness level is different for each person. The adventure weekend will show that everyday women can complete everything that is in store for them. Secondly, the goal of the contest is to get women to challenge themselves, and step outside their comfort zone. In turn realizing the confidence they never knew they had or forgot they had. Completing an activity they never thought they could do will empower them and strengthen their mind, body, and spirit.

“What if they’ve never done this before.”

The purpose of the Women’s Adventure Contest is to get women to try something for the first time, because when you do something that’s mentally and somewhat physically challenging, that is when confidence is gained, and individuals are able to use those skills in their personal and professional life.

Like Deborah Collins Stephens, said at this year’s Indiana conference for Women, referring to how to get women to be strong leaders and successful in business,

“We have to get women comfortable being uncomfortable.”

Women may be uncomfortable at first on an adventure, but taking those risks, stepping outside their comfort zone will excel them to become strong leaders, and give them the confidence they need to succeed.
